What Entity Culling culls
Entity Culling, developed by tr7zw, targets entities and block entities. Mobs, item frames, armor stands, chests, signs and banners fall into this group. It traces visibility from the camera on a separate thread and skips rendering for anything fully hidden behind solid blocks.
What More Culling focuses on
More Culling is a different mod, made by a different developer, aimed at other kinds of culling, such as block faces and leaf rendering. It deals mainly with world geometry rather than mobs and block entities. Because it is its own project, check its documentation for the exact list of features on your version.
Can you use both?
They address different work, so players often consider running them together. Whether that is a good idea on your setup depends on the versions involved and on any overlap in features between specific releases. Read both mods' notes on compatibility, and test in a copy of your world.
A quick way to decide
- Many mobs, storage blocks or signs hidden behind walls: Entity Culling addresses this.
- Heavy foliage or lots of block geometry: a block-focused culling mod may be relevant.
- Low FPS everywhere, even in empty areas: look first at render distance, shaders and your chunk renderer.
Keeping expectations realistic
Culling mods remove work that would be wasted. They cannot make an overloaded scene cheap if most of it is actually in view. Measure in your own world, as described in the 1.20.1 modpack guide.
